This vintage saw some challenges in early bud break proceeding from a dry winter. Zinfandel especially was down in yield and berry size, concentrating the structure and flavor, with a teeter-totter balancing act to achieve all levels of ripeness. The results from our Steinbeck Zinfandel are aromas of Andes Mint and raspberry, wet forest, berry custard, shaved almonds, and a hint of white pepper. The palate is incredibly mouth-watering, dancing between rich and racy; full and restrained; slick and structured. Flavors of mixed berry Italian ice and semi-sweet pomegranate seeds transition to Pistachio Macaron dusted with cinnamon. The finish is an enticing combination of lingering black currant, cigar, and a hint of dry vermouth. I’d pair this wine with a New York Strip, short ribs, or smoked ham. For a vegetarian option I’d suggest lightly baked earthy vegetables like purple carrots, beets, and potatoes drenched in extra virgin California olive oil.
