1958 “Willys” Jeep Tour

300 Acre Vineyard Estate

Come explore our heritage as you travel through vines, along creek-eroded cliff banks, and into the open stillness of our vineyard home. A family member always drives and curates the experience, swapping personal stories, family history, grape growing and winemaking practices, as well as getting to know you as our guests; asking and answering questions, making each tour a unique experience.

Option 1

Jeep Vineyard Tour | History, Viticulture, Winemaking

Starting at the tasting room, our 1921 family built blacksmith shop, converted to feature our wines and history in 2009, we load into the 1958 Jeep “Willy” and hold on as we travel west from the house and deep into gentle hills of the property. The tour leans into the seasonal progress of the vineyard and the land, as we point out the different varieties we grow, discover and witness practices such as pruning, “cleaning”, harvesting, processing, fermentation, aging, and finally tasting the final product of our wines. Always a worthwhile experience and an amazing gift for an incredible value.

John 15 Tour - “I am the Vine, you are the branches”

Guided by author and lifelong Christian educator, Cindy Steinbeck, she unpacks the words of Jesus in John 15, “I am the Vine, you are the branches,” as well as many other passages that relate to the vineyard. Having spent her life studying the Scriptures in the context of her father’s vineyard, she has an informed, unique, and genuine connection to these concepts, about which she has written several books. Join her along a journey of hope, healing, and celebration as she explains her understanding of being grafted to the True Vine, rooted in the love of her creator.

Meet Your Drivers

A woman smiling, holding a small dog on a bicycle handlebar, with a glass of red wine on the table in front of her, outdoors at a place called Steinbeck Distillery. The background shows a wooden sign with the brewery's name.

Cindy Steinbeck

Like her family throughout the generations before her, Cindy pioneered the first vineyard educational tours in Paso Robles (2003). She has a heart that cares for every person she meets, and shares years of varied experiences from her time as a farmer, educator, business owner, and CEO to enhance every moment of her tours. Connected to the land, she was raised here, raised her children here, and shepherds and watches as her grandchildren are being raised here, and she loves sharing this wonderful place with guests from all over the world. Cindy’s mission is to share her vision and passion of sustainable and generational family farming, winemaking, and wine experience, and how these are all supported by foundational and eternal values.

Bryan married Cindy’s daughter in 2008, and a decade later began working with the family winery. Now the winemaker, sales manager, and executive janitor for Steinbeck, he loves the variety of tasks which a small family business offers. Charismatic with a flair for the dramatic, Bryan merges fun stories into tours that often hint at deeper meaning, spurred on by his guests’ experiences and interests. He can answer questions regarding vineyard practices, though his expertise is focused in winemaking and wine tasting. His vocal performance background can frequently lead to a short performances among the barrel stacks, showcasing the amazing acoustics of the Steinbeck Barrel Room. His love and thankfulness for God, his family, for people, and for adventure permeates his tours.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I bring?

  • Dress accordingly for the season and the time of day. Paso Robles has one of the widest daily temperature swings in the world, sometimes dropping 40 degrees in only a few hours. Check the weather at the time of your tour before arriving.

  • Plan for possibly gusty wind. With an open top Jeep, also prepare for appropriate sun coverage for about 45 minutes and hold onto your hats!

  • Climbing into the jeep is possible in high heels, but more rugged footwear is recommended. Closed shoes will also allow you to walk among the vines without getting seeds or thorns in your socks or feet.

  • Please arrive about 10 minutes before the tour, leaving time to sign the waiver and use the facilities.

  • Bring your cameras and phone cameras, take as many photos as you like! If you get a great shot please share it with us!

  • The 1958 Jeep “Willy” is a rugged old vehicle, with a short step to climb in. If you are concerned about accessibility, please share with us in advance.

  • 4 to 6 guests total: The Jeep seats one guest in the front passenger, and four people in the back, five if some are littler.

*Large parties are welcome to book short walking tours from the Tasting Room and into the vineyard and/or production facility.

  • Kids are welcome with an accompanying responsible adult.

  • Dogs are welcome if they are well-behaved, are not skittish from bumps or hills, and will not jump out, even if they see wildlife.

  • The tour can be driven at your comfort level and pace: please let us know if you have any concerns.

  • There is a short waiver that needs to the initialed, dated, and signed by all adults and guardians before leaving on the tour.

  • Tours are normally between 10am and 2pm, though availability depends on the driver’s schedule. Please inquire in advance.

Who can go on the tour?

  • Each tour is unique. With varying weather and seasonal features, your tour will see a different vineyard each month. All tours are led by one of the family members with their own history, stories, experiences, and areas of expertise.

  • Learn from the family’s farming heritage of over 140 years in Paso Robles. Our oldest block of vines were planted in 1982 by Howie Steinbeck, and now the 300 acres of planted vines are tended to by Cindy’s son and Howie’s Grandson, Ryan. Vineyard famers cultivate the land, plant and train vines, prune, graft, spread cover-crop seeds, plow, disc, and aerate the soil. All these and more are part of the tour based on your interest and questions.

  • A small percentage of our estate 300 acre vineyard is grown and picked for our Steinbeck wine brand. Blocks are selected by Cindy’s Son-in-law and winemaker, Bryan, and crafted in small batches, aged in oak barrels before bottling. Topics to discuss are block selection, sampling, processing, pressing, fermentation, aging, blending, stabilization, fining, bottling, and tasting. Sometimes a tour of the production facility is possible.

  • The vineyard contains a diverse collection of animals and plant species. Among the wild grasses, cultivated groundcover, oak trees, and in the vines, here are some of the animals you may see: blacktail deer, peregrine falcons, jackrabbits, cottontails, weasels, bobcats, coyotes, various songbirds, turkey vultures, red-tailed hawks, osprey, bald eagles, golden eagles. Keep your eyes peeled!

  • Cindy will share her life journey as a Christian educator and speaker, her experience with the land and tending her Father’s vineyard, and connecting to the Words of Jesus, “I am the Vine, you are the branches.”

  • *+$30pp, Limited Availability

Taste through a few of our wines aging in barrel with the winemaker, Bryan, who will guide you with his sommelier training and experiences making and judging wine since 2012. Taste through the aging process and how it progresses the wine from raw grape juice to a finished bottle of Steinbeck Wine.
